In round 12 of the Provisional 1 SE league, Ashburton United recorded their 2nd straight win after defeating mid-table Mooroolbark at Ashburton Park.
With its first home win of season 2009, the hosts also moved off the bottom of the standings.
The first half was eventful to say the least, as the home team had pressured Mooroolbark into their half and created many chances in succession.
Allan Ciavarelli flicked just over the crossbar in the opening moments after good work by Con Prountzos to head towards goal.
Just minutes later James Clemson capitalized on a fabulous Clint Boyle free kick that invited all the attackers to make any type of contact, Clemson did just that to head home his second of the season.
Boyle was to play a crucial role yet again, following up on his great performance in the previous round.
His free kicks and long throws constantly created havoc in the opponent’s penalty area.
It was one of those long throws that resulted in Ashburton’s second goal, as it was delivered with such precision that Ben Jackson had an easy header from close range to take a 2-0 lead.
The rest of the half had lots off hard tackling and major fouls both ways as well as some long range shooting but no further goals.
The second half begun where the first left off. Boyle seemed to be delivering from all angles and distances and almost secured the win for Ashburton via a dangerous free kick that barely missed the target from 22-23 meters out.
Mooroolbark managed to hit the Ashy crossbar after some good play and also forced Matt Allen to clear off his goal line right after, hence preserving the host’s two goal cushion.
It was halfway through the second half when the points were finally decided, as James Clemson showed a piece of individual brilliance by beating two defenders from the by line before blasting home with his left foot.
Justin Phengrasmy also had two opportunities to extend the lead however he failed to hit the target.
The visitors rallied late on and had many attempts at goal of which one has found its way through to Ben Devlin’s net via an accurate left foot drive from just outside the box.
Final Score, 3-1 to Ashburton United.
Meanwhile, Ashburton's reserves have continued their free fall going down 0-4 to Mooroolbark's reserves.
Thirds Wrap Up – Round 9 Match Reports
By Theo Daviotis
Ashburton Green lost 3-2 away to league leaders Springvale City.
A gallant effort by the Greens, which were somewhat hard-done-by after being 2-1 up with 10 minutes to play with only 1 sub (who was injured) and a goalkeeper playing hurt. Goal scorers Tim Kirwan and Richard Lee.
Ashburton Gold came from 3-1 down to win their game 5-4 against Old Brighton Grammarians.
Playing at home in front of a crowd of 56 and a dog, Jack Houston opened the Greens account after trailing 2-0.
Ashburton conceded a third goal before captain Patrick Sowersby produced a best-on-ground performance by netting a hat-trick.
The match was levelled at 4-4, before a great run of play involving the entire midfielders, notably Andrew Walsh and Tim Smith, which was sublimely finished by first time goal scorer Brett Herskope. An excellent performance which established this sides place on the top half of the table (6th), with 11 points, 8 points behind leaders Springvale City.
The Greens sit 9th with 7 points.

A win, at last! - Round 11 Match Report
on Sunday 21 June 2009 - 10:00:28 | by Roving Reporter
It may have taken 11 games however Ashburton United have finally recorded a win in season 2009 following a 4-3 win away to Doveton in Provisional League 1 S/E action.
Ashburton commenced the game in excellent fashion as they found themselves ahead within three minutes. A free-kick was awarded and a superb cross from Clint Boyle found James Clemson who shot at goal and into the path of Con Prountzos to score from close range. An unfamiliar feeling for Ashburton, 1-0 up with only a few minutes played.
Things got better for the side as Boyle and Prountzos linked up yet again to double the advantage. A superb long throw from Boyle found the head of Prountzos who out-jumped his marker and headed beyond the goal keeper. Ashburton 2-0 ahead and only seven minutes played.
Unfortunately the two-goal lead didn’t last long as Doveton pulled a goal back in the 10th minute following a lapse in concentration by the Ashburton defence. Following a free kick, a thumping low drive at goal was blocked by Ben Devlin but into the path of an oncoming attacker to pull the score back to 2-1.
It got worse for Ashburton in the 30th minute as Doveton found an equaliser courtesy of a top-notch free-kick. Hugo Reyes stepped up from 30 yards and sent his thumping free-kick into the top left corner and gave Ashburton goal keeper Devlin no chance.
A queasy feeling of déjà vu for Ashburton as the side had once again thrown away the lead.
Following some stern words from coach Con Karagiannidis at half-time, Ashburton came out firing in the second-half and re-took the lead in the 52nd minute following a superb free-kick.
Man of the match Clint Boyle stepped up for Ashburton and sent his looping free-kick over the goal keeper for a dazzling goal and it was advantage-Ashburton yet again.
Ashburton did everything possible to maintain the lead and the squad was awarded in the 75th minute courtesy of James Clemson.
Ben Jackson was released on the wing and crossed in a superb low pass into the feet of James Clemson who made no mistake and gave Ashburton another two-goal buffer.
Nonetheless, typical of Ashburton’s luckless season in 2009, Doveton pulled another goal back in the 89th minute courtesy of deflected low drive that beat Devlin in goal. 4-3 and a very nervy finish to follow.
Ashburton almost found themselves on the end of a disastrous end to the game as Doveton’s final attack forward forced a superb point blank double-save from Devlin in goal.
Nonetheless, despite doing it tough, Ashburton picked up their first win of the season.
Ashburton’s next game, Saturday June 27, is home to Mooroolbark at Ashburton Park as Ashburton hope for a better ‘second half’ of the season.
Meanwhile, Ashburton's second-team suffered yet another defeat going down 2-0.

Ashburton remains winless! - Round 10 Match Report

In round 10 of the Provisional League 1 SE sector, table toping Fitzroy City paid a visit to bottom of the league Ashburton United who were still searching for their first win in season 2009.
The first half was eventful enough and it clearly showed why Fitzroy City is on top of the league.
The visitor’s ball possession was only slightly more than Ashburton’s however the quality of it and the technique of all players seemed to be crucial in determining the outcome of the game.
Fitzroy’s first goal arrived halfway through the half, after a long range effort was well saved by the diving Ben Devlin in the home goal but the rebound found another City player who made no mistake, 0-1.
Ashburton was temporarily down to 10 men due to injury, when the visitors doubled their lead as Nathan Jones found himself open in the box as he had plenty of time to control the ball and shoot past the helpless Ashy keeper.
Ben Jackson had tested the away goalie with a hard low shot that was well saved prior to having a couple of free kick attempts to no avail.
The second half started with Ashburton working hard to get back in the game but Fitzroy managed to win the second half as well due to their superior experience and ball movement.
James Clemson has created himself a great opportunity early on, only to miss the target from close range.
Fitzroy replied with an amazing long distance shot that found its way to the top right corner with the home keeper only managing a slight touch.
As the hosts started to attack more and more, the away side capitalized on a corner via a well placed header to make the score line 0-4.
Ashburton kept pushing though and Tony Lazarou let fly from a fair way out, only to see his effort tipped over the crossbar by the Fitzroy keeper.
As Fitzroy found themselves forced into their half, the deserved solitary home goal had come from the left foot of Sam Jennens, as the hard working midfielder was rewarded by a fine goal following a dangerous corner.
Alex Victory also had an attempt at scoring late on but it wasn’t to be as his full volley missed the target by a slight margin.
Final Score, 1-4 to Fitzroy City leaving Ashburton in a desperate situation to find a way to start winning and hence survive in the division.
In Reserves' Action: The second team fared slightly better by losing 2-4 to their Fitzroy counterparts after leading 2-1 at the half. The goals were scored by Alex McInnes & long serving defender Andrew Dodds.

In yet another local derby in Provisional 1 S/E, Ashburton United held Old Camberwell Grammarians to a 1-1 away at Deepdene Park on Saturday. Ashburton, currently bottom in the league standings visited a confident mid-table Old Camberwell outift in what was a fiery match with two penalties and three red cards.
In positive news for the side, Ashburton welcomed back striker James Clemson following a lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury.
The game commenced with both teams having their fair share of possession however Ashburton were provided with a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 20th minute after a penalty was awarded for a foul inside the box.
James Clemson stepped-up to take the penalty, however his thumping attempt was well saved by the big Old Camberwell goalkeeper and the score remained at 0-0.
Ashburton were made to rue the missed penalty in the 26th minute mark as a quick break forward by the opposition unhinged the Ashburton defence. A deep cross made its way to the edge of the box before Bill Giannikos looped his volley over the Ashburton defence and goal keeper to give the home side the lead.
In the 42nd minute Ashburton found their equalizer courtesy of another awarded penalty following an infringement against Con Prountzos inside the box. On this occasion Luc Delaney stepped up for Ashburton and sent his penalty beyond the goal keeper to bring the score level.
The second half saw a very even display in terms of chances, however Ashburton came mighty close to taking the lead in the 65th minute following some excellent footwork from James Clemson and a thumping shot that cannoned off the post. Ashburton had yet another chance in the 70th minute to take the lead following a superb attacking move, however Tim Kirwan’s stunning shot skimmed the outside of the post.
The second half also saw three red cards produced by the referee, two for Old Camberwell and one for Ashburton.
Nonetheless, despite Ashburton’s pressure and persistence, the side had to settle for a draw and currently remain rooted to the bottom of the league table.
Final score 1-1 and Ashburton with a lot of work to do as we approach the half-way mark of the season.
Ashburton United’s next match, Saturday June 13 2009, is the 'top versus bottom' fixture as Ashburton host Fitzroy City at Ashburton Park.
Meanwhile, the reserves also continued their dismal run and now find themselves bottom of the league standings following a 2-1 defeat against Old Camberwell. Old Camberwell took the lead late in the first half and doubled their advantage early in the second. Vladimir Demsar pulled a goal back for the side with just over 10 minutes remaining, however Ashburton’s reserves went down once again with a 2-1 defeat.
DID YOU KNOW???: The last time Ashburton's first-team visited Deepdene Park and played against Old Camberwell's first-team was way back in round 15 of season 1998. Ashburton were victorious on that occasion and current reserves coach Danny Thorne found the back of the net in a 3-2 win.
Thirds Report by Theo Daviotis - Round 6 Wrap-up: Mixed Weekend for the Green & the Gold.
Ashburton Gold are back on the winners list with a convincing defeat of a determined South Eastern United squad. An impressive 2-nil win away from home came courtesy of quality strikes on either side of the half by Campbell Woollacott (39th minute) and Theo Daviotis (74th).
The Gold’s dominated play throughout the 90 minutes, as Woollacott was certainly their standout out player creating numerous opportunities for his teammates. He was unlucky to double his tally as his shots from outside the box hit the crossbar/upright on three occasions. Ashburton captain, Patrick Sowersby, was “Vidic-esque” easily denying United few chances.
However, the win came at a cost as playmaker Thomas Jufri-Robson (groin) and defender Jack Houston (hamstring) succumbed to injury.
Meanwhile, an undermanned Ashburton Green side played Nova United at home (Warner Reserve). Missing several key players through injury and suspension, the 11-man squad included the courageous Tim Rollason, who midweek discovered he had cracked ribs and a tender shoulder.
The score line was not a true reflection of the evenness of the two squads, the obvious difference being Nova capitalising on their chances. The Green’s only goal came courtesy of their captain/manager Kenneth Chatterton. His first goal for the club in 33 starts. The 7-1 loss is one that should be quickly forgotten. Standout players were Jerry Kakolyris and Mathew Case. Round 7 sees the return of Luke Goodman (from suspension), Harry Kornaros (from injury – sprained wrist) and Alastair Paul (from injury - hamstring) to the Green’s squad, which will surely re-ignite their chances to compete for the championship.

Old Scotch edges local derby! - Round 8 Match Report

By Chris Balogh
Ashburton United hosted neighboring Old Scotch in the 8th round of the Provisional 1 SE league.
Looking for their first win of season 2009 the hosts made some changes in their starting lineup.
The first half was fairly even in most statistical terms, as both teams canceled each other out and not creating any clear-cut chances.
Yet Allan Ciavarelli managed to hit the visitor’s crossbar via a dangerous cross came shot,
just before the home side was forced to play the reminder of the game without their top scoring captain Ben Jackson, who had to leave the game injured.
The away team had some promising attacks on their own however they were unable to really test Ben Devlin in the home goal.
Ashburton’s most promising chances developed from free kicks & corners where the closest attempts belonged to Tim Kerwan who went the direct route while Matt Allen and Con Prountzos both missed headers.
The second half unfortunately for the home faithful followed the pattern of the previous matches played at Ashburton Park this season, as the away team increased their tempo & ball possession and created some valuable opportunities.
It paid dividends half way through the second period with Jonathan Beamish took advantage of some space to finish well with his right foot from just inside the box.
Matt Allen had a tremendous game in the host’s backline stopping Old Scotch’s attacks with some crucial tackling.
To Ashburton’s credit, they didn’t give in and tried everything to tie up the score.
Ciavarelli had the best chance only seconds before the final whistle but he couldn’t capitalize on a great Justin Phengrasmy cross as his effort was saved by the Scotch keeper to bring up the final score of 0-1 to Old Scotch.
The Ashburton Reserves went down 0-3 to their Old Scotch counterparts and must improve significantly to climb up on the ladder.
DID YOU KNOW???: Ben Devlin is the youngest goalkeeper ever - at the age of 15 - to have appeared in the Senior's team.
DID YOU KNOW???: After 8 rounds completed in the 2009 season the seniors and reserves both scored 8 goals apiece, to achieve the same 1 goal / game scoring average.

It was a forgettable weekend for the Green and Gold squads as they were both defeated in their Round 5 fixtures.
Ashburton Green lost 4-1 against Caulfield Cobras at Victory Park. The Greens could not capitalize on any of their numerous chances throughout the game, which proved to be costly.
The Greens only goal coming courtesy of a superb Alastair Paul header. The loss was marred by the sending off of Luke Goodman for dissent, and Caulfield being awarded two very soft penalties, which were both converted.
The story was the same at Ashburton Park as the Gold’s losing streak continues, this time a 3-nil defeat by Whitehorse United.
Again, another soft penalty against Ashburton was given (10th minute) Although, the Gold’s did appear to regain composure after this early goal, Whitehorse Utd were deserved winners scoring again before the half and again midway through the second.
To add salt into the wounds, both Jake Houston (hamstring) and Ren Clavey (calf) could not finish-off the match due to injury.
Round 6 fixtures:
Please note new time for Ashburton Green
Ashburton Green – Home (Warner Rsv) against Nova, kick-off 1:20pm .
Ashburton Gold – Away to South Eastern United (Westall Secondary College – Mel Ref 79G7), kick-off 3pm.

Another bad day on the road - Round 7 Match Report
on Monday 18 May 2009 - 16:24:31 | by Roving Reporter
Ashburton United’s misery continues following yet another heavy defeat away from home, this time a 4-1 loss to Endeavour United in round 7 Provisional League 1 S/E action.
Ashburton made a fantastic start to the game as the side took the lead in the 9th minute. A long throw-in found the feet of striker Sam Jennens who scored in excellent style with a cracking half-volley on the edge of the box.
Ashburton looked as though they would double their advantage on several occasions, however the side was pegged back in the 19th minute, as Endeavour found the back of the net following a lapse in concentration by Ashburton’s defence.
Ashburton looked to settle play, however in the 24th minute Endeavour took the lead after an unmarked attacker headed the ball over goal keeper Ben Devlin following a deep cross.
Ashburton were starved of chances in the second half, and eventually the game was killed off following two goals from Endeavour United with less than 15 minutes remaining.
A miserable day as Ashburton fell to their fifth loss in seven games. More tough fixtures are on the way, including this weekend’s local derby against Old Scotch at Ashburton Park (May 23 2009).
Round 4 - Thirds Match Reports
Ashburton Green were held to a 2-all draw at home by South Springvale. A great effort given that all 11 men on the field played the entire game with no substitutions available.
The Greens remain undefeated from 2 starts, with Kai Maxfield scoring twice, taking his goal tally to 3 for the season. Maxfield remains the only scorer for the Greens. With a game in hand, the draw sees the Greens leapfrog Ashburton Gold on the ladder on goal difference as the Golds suffered their first defeat of the 2009 season.
A 5-0 thumping away to an experienced side in Springvale City. Not to take credit away from City, some would say that they were fortunate to be awarded three dubious goals that otherwise could have easily been given offside.
The score-line was not indicative of the sate of play, as the Gold’s made City’s defence look second-rate, yet they squandered numerous opportunities, whereas City finished theirs. It appears that Springvale City are the “yard-stick” of this season competition, however from the performances shown on Sunday both Green and Gold have the depth in squads to challenge for the title.

Brave Ashburton held at home! - Round 6 Match Report

Ashburton United has earned its first point at home of the current season by drawing against Warragul United in round 6 of the Provisional 1 SE region.
Ashy entered the game very motivated and hungry to prove that their league positioning isn’t reflecting their performances while the return of Con Prountzos also adding a much needed boost and experience to help push the team towards the desired success.
The first half was all Ashburton. Luc Delaney came close with a long range curler after a sizzling run, not long before the home side’s first goal.
It arrived from the captain and top goal scorer Ben Jackson, who headed home from only a meter out to cap off a great run and inch perfect delivery from Tim Kirwan.
The hosts kept attacking and Con Prountzos almost doubled the lead from close range but he shot just over the bar in the crowded penalty area.
In the 35th minute though Sam Jennens received a through ball just inside the opponents half, to take it on and dribble past the onrushing Warragul defender to pick out the top right corner from just inside the penalty box for a 2-0 lead.
Ben Jackson and Luc Delaney also had further shots from close and long range respectively to take the game beyond doubt but they were to be denied.
The second half started brightly for the home side as Ben Jackson got a gift from the opposing goalkeeper’s clearance but he managed to squeeze his right foot shot just centimeters past the post.
The turning point of the game arrived just after the hour mark, as the so far totally unemployed Ben Devlin in the Ashburton goal had to face a dubious penalty for his first meaningful bit of action. Paul Cooper of Warragul dispatched his penalty calmly giving the 15 year old keeper no chance.
Only a few minutes later the young goalie demonstrated his potentials by pulling off a point blank stop to deny the stunned Warragul striker.
The visitors pushed on and were rewarded with the equalizer as a well delivered free kick in the box was headed onto the arriving Dino Theodoros who headed in from the closest of distances.
Shortly after the equalizer, the home team got a bit of help for the reminder of the game as the away team was reduced to ten men. Unfortunately for Ashburton it only showed in increased ball possession and territorial advantage with some long range efforts to no avail.
Final score 2-2.
The signs are positive though for Ashburton United, as they not only played their best game of 2009 so far but yet to field their top scorer from the last 2 seasons – James Clemson – who is getting closer to a much anticipated return.
In Reserves action: Ashburton's second team did everything but score against Warragul United and since the visitors took advantage of their biggest opportunity the game ended as 0-1. The Ressies need to find their scoring touch that deserted them since round 2.

Thirds Match Report
Report – SE Div 5 Thirds League - Ashburton 2 off to a flying start.
Round 3: 10/05/09, 12:30 pm kick off.
Ashburton 2 Thirds have begun their 2009 campaign with a 1-nil win at home against Bentleigh Greens. The goal came in the 10 minute after being awarded a penalty courtesy of a deliberate Bentleigh handball within their 18 yard box. A confident Kai Maxfield made no mistake from the spot kick.
Bentleigh when into the Round 3 fixture undefeated, and looked like equalizing on several occasions, but Ashy goal keeper Tom O’Byrne was in impressive form, making several stunning last line saves. Ashburton also looked like extending on their lead, but only managed shake the upright from a Will Christianos 30 meter strike and skim the cross bar via another long range attempt from Tom Jufri-Robson.
In the 75th minute Bentleigh were reduced to 10 men due to the sending off of one of their forwards. However, Ashburton failed to take advantage, and to Bentleigh’s credit they came agonizingly close in stealing a point with several late opportunities that proved unsuccessful.
