Ashburton Draws against Caulfield

Ashburton has secured a draw against Caulfield Cobras at Ashburton Park.

Within minutes after kick-off, Ashburton found themselves down 0-1 when Caulfield spotted a running midfielder with a through-ball, who made no mistake to put the visitors up.

Neither team could take control of the game after that, although Ashburton had the best chance to score when James Clemson slalomed his way through the Caulfield defence, but after taking on one player too many he couldn’t get his effort on target.

Ger Post had another good opportunity to pull Ashy level, but couldn’t connect with a header.

Ashburton stepped up a gear in the second half, and started to take control of the game. Caulfield struggled to cope with this pressure, and eventually Ashburton found a breakthrough to level the scores. James Clemson managed to convert from a corner kick.

Neither side could then find a way to score the winner, ending the game in a fair result considering the performance of both sides.

Meanwhile, Ashburton reserves produced a disappointing effort to lose 1-5 against Caulfield Cobras Reserves.

Ashburton was caught napping after 10 minutes, when a midfielder from Caulfield was left to run in behind the defence and score an easy goal. It could have been worse soon after when Caulfield was given a penalty, but lucky for the home side the spot-kick hit the bar.

Caulfield were pegged back somewhat after that, but Ashburton could not find the breakthrough, with Nolan White and Kevin Langan receiving little in the way of service and support.

Caulfield ran away with the game in the second half, comprehensively beating Ashburton in the midfield battle and establishing a 0-4 lead, before Michel van Eijk finally pegged one back from a rebound off the keeper. Caulfield then scored another goal to make it 1-5

Ashburton’s next game will be against Monbulk at Ashburton Park on 25 June 2011.
